Our Willowbrook Spotlight On… series highlights the compassionate and committed members of our team who embody the values of respect, dignity, and excellence in Social Care.

This month, we are delighted to shine a spotlight on Julie Hatherley, Extra Care Registered Manager at Hare Hill, Littleborough. Julie’s journey in the care sector is one of dedication, growth, and heartfelt passion. Let us get to know more about the inspiration behind her career.

*How long have you been in the Care Sector/with Willowbrook?

I have worked in the care sector for 21 years. My journey began as a community carer, where I spent 11 years supporting people in their own homes. I had the privilege of caring for service users at the old Hare Hill Court before it was demolished to make way for the new Hare Hill, which opened in 2015. I watched the new building take shape and knew I wanted to be a part of it.

When Hare Hill opened in May 2015, I initially stayed in my previous role to continue supporting one of my service users who was nearing the end of life. In September 2015, I officially joined Hare Hill as a Care Support Worker. Since then, I have progressed from Team Leader to Registered Manager almost two years ago.

Hare Hill holds a special place in my heart. The building itself is beautiful, but it is the people—both the service users and my colleagues—that truly make it feel like one big family. There is a genuine sense of warmth, support, and community here, and I love being a part of it.

*What attracted you to the Care Sector/Willowbrook?

After leaving school at 16, I pursued a City and Guilds qualification in catering and enjoyed various roles within the industry while raising my three children. My last position in catering was as a part-time cook in a small residential home.

Whilst I loved cooking, I found myself increasingly drawn to the residents. Whenever I had a spare moment, I would sit with them, listen to their stories, and offer companionship.

One day, the home needed extra support, and I was asked if I was interested in covering a care shift. Although I was initially unsure, I agreed, and I have never regretted that decision. That one shift changed everything for me. I realised that caring for others was my true calling, and I have been working in the sector ever since.

*What qualifications have you achieved/worked towards/gained to date?

I have achieved my Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications in Health and Social Care, and I am currently working towards my Level 5.

*Would you like to study for more qualifications/do more training?

Absolutely. I believe that learning never stops. Every day presents an opportunity to gain new knowledge and skills, and I welcome any training that helps me improve in my role and provide the best possible care.

*Where do you see yourself in five years/your career goals and aspirations?

I hope to still be at Hare Hill, continuing to make a positive difference in the lives of both our service users and employees.  My goal is to ensure that everyone here feels valued, supported, and well cared for.

*How do you achieve satisfaction/success in your role?

For me, success is measured in the happiness and well-being of the people we support and the colleagues I work alongside. I pride myself on being a good listener and treating everyone with the respect and kindness they deserve. I always strive to give 100% in everything I do, knowing that even the smallest gestures can have a significant impact.

*Do you have a mentor? If so, tell us about them. What or who inspires you?

One of the most inspiring people I have ever met was a former service user at Hare Hill. She was a retired Nurse Lecturer from Birch Hill Hospital, and despite her initial reluctance to engage with most people, we connected instantly. Every day, she encouraged me to pursue my nursing qualifications, insisting that I had what it took to succeed. When the Manager’s role became available, she told me I should apply—but then hesitated, jokingly saying, “No, because then I won’t see you every morning!”

Her faith in me and her words of encouragement have stayed with me ever since. She taught me that believing in yourself is just as important as the work you do, and I carry that lesson with me every day.

*What is the best advice you have ever received, or what advice would you give to others?

I was raised with the belief that you should always treat others as you would like to be treated. Respect, kindness, and empathy are fundamental values in both life and care work.

Another principle I stand by is never asking someone to do something that you would not do yourself. Leading by example and working as part of a team is key to creating a positive and supportive environment.

*What do you love or enjoy the most about what you do?

There are so many things I love about my role:

  • The people we support and care for—listening to their life stories and being a part of their journey is a privilege.
  • Helping people maintain their independence and improve their quality of life.
  • The incredible family atmosphere at Hare Hill—it is more than just a workplace; it is a community.
  • Knowing that, in even the smallest ways, I am making a difference in people’s lives.

Julie’s journey is a testament to the dedication and passion that make Willowbrook Homecare such a special place.

We are incredibly proud to have her as part of our team and grateful for the compassionate care she brings to Hare Hill every day.
