Our Willowbrook Spotlight On… series highlights the compassionate and committed members of our team who embody the values of respect, dignity, and excellence in social care.

This month, we are delighted to shine a spotlight on Mel Harkness, Extra Care Team Leader at Primrose Gardens. Mel’s journey in the social care sector is one of dedication, growth, and heartfelt passion. Let us get to know more about the inspiration behind her career.

*How long have you been in the Care Sector/with Willowbrook?

I began my journey in the care sector back in 2016, inspired by personal circumstances after my uncle was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

My early career involved supporting individuals with no capacity and learning disabilities, before progressing into specialist services. I have had the privilege of working alongside individuals with autism, learning disabilities, and mental health conditions – a role that was both challenging and incredibly rewarding.

It was a challenging environment, but each day brought new experiences and opportunities to help people achieve things they never thought possible. Over time, I progressed through various roles – from Support Worker to Senior, Acting Deputy Manager, Team Manager and Service Manager.

In 2023, life took a personal turn when my mum’s health began to decline, and I was grieving the loss of my dear dad. It was a tough time, and I realised I needed to reconnect with myself and refocus. That is when I found Willowbrook Homecare. I joined the team in January 2024 as a Care Support Worker at Riverside Heights in Darwen, and I have not looked back since. The values of Willowbrook resonate with me; it truly feels like home.

*What attracted you to the Care Sector/Willowbrook?

I have always had a strong desire to give back and support those in need. My passion is to provide exceptional care and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

*What qualifications have you achieved/worked towards/gained to date?

I left school as a young mum without qualifications, but I returned to study in my mid[1]30s and gained my GCSEs. From there, I worked hard to complete an HND and then an Honours Degree in Criminology. At that time, I was advised that this could be an alternative route into nursing—a field I had always been interested in but had struggled to pursue due to difficulties with science and math. My journey has shown that it’s never too late to learn or grow.

*Would you like to study for more qualifications/do more training?

Yes! I would love to complete my Level 4/5 NVQ. Training is an essential part of development, especially in care, where things are constantly evolving. Knowledge is power, and I firmly believe in continuous learning.

*Where do you see yourself in five years?

I would like to keep building on my experience through training, mentoring, and leadership. My goal is to keep growing and supporting others to grow too, creating a positive, empowered team where everyone feels valued.

*What brings you satisfaction and success in your role?

  • I always give 100% in everything I do.
  • I strive to be the best version of myself and to lead by example.
  • Supporting my team is a huge part of what I love – I believe in being approachable, compassionate, and always there when someone is having a tough day.
  • I believe that when we work together, we can overcome anything. I take pride in getting things done and making a real difference.

*Do you have a mentor or someone who inspires you?

My grandma was my biggest inspiration. She was deeply involved in the East Lancashire Hospice, Brownies, and Guides – always giving back and fundraising for worthy causes. She was a true all-rounder; a florist, a dressmaker, a mum, a grandma, and a great grandma. She showed me that you can wear many hats and still lead with your heart.

*What is the best advice you have received or would like to give?

  • “Teamwork makes the dream work.”
  • Always treat everyone with kindness and respect, and never ask someone to do something you would not do yourself.
  • Together, we can achieve so much more.

*What do you love most about your role?

I love seeing positive change, especially when it helps things run more smoothly for the people we support. Change can be a powerful thing, and when it is implemented thoughtfully, it can transform lives.

Mel’s journey is a shining example of resilience, growth, and unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of the people we support.

We are incredibly proud to have her as part of the Willowbrook team and truly grateful for the compassion, leadership, and positivity she brings to Primrose Gardens every single day
